Why are we here?

Written for travellers by travellers, Tales From the Other Side's guides are well regarded for their detailed coverage, unique layout and for being the only guidebooks which cater primarily to the needs of the independent traveller.

A quick word about us.

We set up Tales From the Other Side in 1995 primarily because we felt that the other guidebooks were losing interest in budget travellers like ourselves as they scrammbled to widen their appeal and market share. It was only after years of individual travel that we decided to give it a go - by which time we felt we had a well rounded idea of what was needed to create a series of quality independent travel guides.

Specialising in Southeast Asia, Tales From the Other Side has so far published two guidebooks, Thailand For Travellers by Travellers (1997) and Vietnam For Travellers by Travellers (1995). The Thailand guidebook was described by the Sydney Morning Herald as "This is easily the best current guidebook to Thailand" (SMH 28/6/97).

Unlike some of the other publishers in this business, Tales From the Other Side's researchers travel just like they used to. Long and painful bus or truck trips, lengthy hitching trips and numerous periods lost on the varied waterways of the region have left the researchers travelling essentially as the locals do. This has resulted in a down to earth appraisal of exactly how one can get around on a reasonable budget. If one of our researchers says a bus ride is not going to be comfortable, rest assured they have tested the seat out with their own bum.

Also unlike some of the other publishers, if you read about a destination in one of our books, rest assured that our researcher has actually been there.
