WHAT IS SAKURA HOSTEL?

SAKURA Hostel is a dormitory for the poor hilltribes of the Northern Thailand who attend school in the town. It is located within the property of United Village School (1286 students, 47 teachers) in Nam Lat, Chiang Rai. At the time of May 2001, 147 students are living, of which 80% are primary/junior school students, and 20% commute to high school and vocational school in the town. Those children are supported financially by Sato-Oya (Foster Parents).
SAKURA HOSTEL has 3 dorms, and they are HIMAWARI KAN (BOYS) (above) and SUMIRE KAN (GIRLS) (middle) SHIRAYURI KAN (GIRLS) (below)
SUMIRE KAN (capacity 70) was built in 1993 with the donation from Tokyo Seihoku Rotary Club and Japanese supporters at \7 million, and 60 girls are currently boarding. HIMAWARI KAN (capacity 50) was built in 1994 with the fund from Volunteer Saving Fund of Ministry of Postal Service at \6.75 million, and 40 boys are accommodated. SHIRAYURI KAN (CAPACITY 60) was built in 1999 with the donation from Mr.Hiroshi Itsuki (singer) and a foster parent Mr and Mrs Saegusa at \7 million, and currently 30 girls are living here.
Entering Students are selected every May by exams, interviews, and family surveys, and the successful candidates are as follows;
1. Living in the remote areas without any appropriate educational facilities witin accessible distance.
2. Orphans, or those who do not have appropriate guardian. Also, those who have problems within family, and parents lack ability to bring up and protect children.
3. Children from those Families whose annual income not exceeding 3000 Baht
4. Students with strong willingness to study, studious personality, and prospectus for the future.
5. Students with academic excellency who cleared certain points at the entrance exam.
We support those who meet some of above 5 aspects, however, as we have so many candidates every year, we use results of family survey, interviews, and exams as a reference to judge.
